Supporting Neurodivergent Teens: Understanding, Connection, and Practical Strategies for Families

By Dr. Lisa Konick & Amanda McMillen | Inside the Teen Mind Podcast – Episode 4 Companion Article

Parents often describe their teens as bright, creative, insightful, and completely overwhelmed by everyday expectations. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many families today are navigating what it means to raise a neurodivergent teen, sometimes without even realizing that neurodivergence may be part of the picture.

Understanding how neurodivergent teens experience the world can shift parenting from frustration to connection and give families practical tools that truly support their child’s growth and confidence.

What Does Neurodivergent Mean?

The term neurodivergent has become increasingly common in schools, therapy settings, and even among teens themselves. Clinically, neurodivergence refers to differences in how the brain processes, interprets, or responds to information compared to what is considered neurotypical functioning.

Importantly, neurodivergence is not a diagnosis. It is an umbrella term that can include:

Autism spectrum differences / ASD

ADHD

Dyslexia and other learning differences

Sensory processing differences Tourette’s syndrome

Giftedness paired with executive-function challenges

Anxiety-related processing differences

At its core, neurodivergence simply means a teen experiences and interacts with the world differently, not better, not worse, just different.

Early Signs Parents Often Notice

Many parents first seek support when they notice patterns that feel confusing or inconsistent.

Common concerns include:

“They’re so bright, but they can’t finish tasks.”

“They can hyperfocus on preferred activities but avoid responsibilities.”

“They’re not lazy… but they seem stuck.”

These experiences often reflect differences in attention, motivation, or emotional regulation, not defiance or lack of effort.

Common Clues of Neurodivergent Processing

Inconsistent attention

Difficulty starting or completing tasks

Emotional intensity or dysregulation

Becoming overwhelmed during transitions

Rigid routines or strong preferences

Sensory sensitivities

Difficulty reading social cues

Frustration with everyday tasks Interest-driven motivation

Deep focus on preferred topics

These signs alone do not confirm a diagnosis but can help parents shift from frustration toward understanding.

How Neurodivergence Shows Up Across Development

Neurodivergence can look different as children grow, which is why many families feel uncertain about what is developmentally typical versus something requiring additional support.

Early Childhood

Frequent meltdowns or tantrums

Sensory overload

Difficulty with transitions

Elementary Years

Peer misunderstandings

Difficulty following multi-step directions

Homework frustration and meltdowns

Middle School

Executive-function breakdowns

Increased social comparison

Emotional and cognitive burnout after school

High School

Overwhelm from academic demands

Avoidance or shutdown behaviors

Difficulty balancing independence and expectations

Many of these behaviors are mistaken for stubbornness or lack of motivation, when they often reflect genuine overwhelm.

The Social World of Neurodivergent Teens

Most neurodivergent teens want friendships and connections just as deeply as their peers. However, social environments often require skills that may still be developing or require explicit teaching.

Common Social Challenges

Understanding social nuance or group dynamics

Perspective taking

Reading facial expressions, tone, or body language

Conversations that become focused on preferred interests

Impulsivity or inattentiveness that may be misinterpreted by peers as disinterest

Masking or camouflaging behaviors to fit in, which can be emotionally exhausting

How Parents Can Help

Support begins with empathy and realistic expectations. Many teens benefit from:

Explicit teaching of social expectations

Coaching before social events

Practicing conversation and conflict-resolution skills

Opportunities to connect around shared interests

Community environments, mentoring programs, and structured social skills therapy can provide safe spaces where neurodivergent teens can build confidence and authentic friendships.

When supported in environments that reduce pressure and allow authentic participation, neurodivergent teens often build strong, meaningful friendships.

Emotional Challenges in Neurodivergent Teens

Emotional differences are common and stem from neurological variations in processing stress, sensory input, and uncertainty. Many neurodivergent teens experience emotions more intensely or have difficulty regulating emotional responses.

Emotional Patterns Parents May Notice

Rapid shifts from calm to overwhelmed

Increased anxiety during transitions or unclear expectations

Shutdowns, withdrawal, or emotional outbursts

Difficulty labeling or communicating emotions

These responses are not intentional misbehavior. They often reflect nervous system dysregulation and skill-building needs.

How Therapy Supports Emotional Growth

Research-supported therapeutic approaches can help teens develop essential emotional and behavioral skills. Therapy can be highly effective when it focuses on concrete, skill-based strategies such as:

Emotional regulation and recognizing early signs of distress

Distress tolerance and grounding strategies

Coping with transitions and unexpected changes

Social skills training

Executive-function skill development

Understanding how their brain processes experiences, with a focus on neurological strengths and differences

When teens understand how their brain works, they often experience relief, reduced shame, and increased willingness to engage in coping strategies.

Supporting Emotional Regulation at Home

Parents play a powerful role in helping neurodivergent teens build resilience.

Helpful strategies include:

Using clear, direct, and concrete communication

Providing advanced notice of transitions or changes

Allow time for transitions

Breaking tasks into smaller, structured steps

Offering choices to increase autonomy

Validating emotions, even when their reactions seems disproportionate to the situation

Remaining calm and predictable during emotional moments

When parents remain steady, teens feel safer and better able to regulate their emotions. And when therapy strategies are reinforced at home, teens often generalize skills more successfully across environments.

Academic Challenges and Executive Functioning

Many neurodivergent teens are highly intelligent and creative but struggle with executive-function skills required in traditional school environments. Common academic challenges include:

Procrastination

Disorganization

Difficulty planning or prioritizing

Trouble initiating tasks

Difficulty with time management

Challenges with sustained attention

With appropriate support, neurodivergent teens can thrive academically. Academic success often improves when support focuses on structure, skill-building, and reducing overwhelm rather than increasing pressure.

Building Confidence and Self-Advocacy

Confidence grows when teens feel understood and supported in developing independence.

Confidence-Building Strategies

Emphasize strengths and interests

Praise effort rather than perfection

Encourage independence when appropriate

Support passion-based activities

Helpful Parent Language

“What part feels hardest?”

“Let’s start this together.”

“Would a checklist or reminder help?”

“Would now or later work better?”

“How can I support you?”

Support Resources for Families

Families do not have to navigate neurodivergence alone. A combination of supports often produces the best outcomes.

School Supports

504 Plans

IEP evaluations

Occupational or speech therapy services

Executive-function coaching

Therapeutic Supports

Individual therapy

Family therapy

Parent coaching

Neuropsychological evaluations

Group therapy or social skills groups

Community Supports

Mentoring programs

Teen centers and peer programs

Clubs, camps, and interest-based activities

Embracing Neurodivergent Strengths

Neurodivergent teens often possess remarkable creativity, insight, problem-solving ability, and depth of thinking. When adults stop trying to fit teens into rigid molds and instead support how their brains work, teens are more likely to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.

With understanding, practical tools, and steady support, neurodivergent teens can develop confidence in who they are and how they move through the world.

🎧 Listen to Episode 4 of Inside the Teen Mind for a deeper conversation on supporting neurodivergent teens.

Final Thoughts

Neurodivergent teens are not “too emotional” or “overreacting.” They are navigating the world with nervous systems that process differently. When adults shift from trying to change teens to understanding their wiring, teens feel safer, more capable, and more confident.

At Konick & Associates, our therapy and assessment teams specialize in supporting neurodivergent children, teens, and families through evidence-based therapy, parent coaching, and comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations.

For community connection, the Alive Center provides a teen-led, teen-driven space dedicated to supporting adolescents through mentoring, belonging, and empowerment.

Alive offers neurodivergent teens a place to connect authentically, develop confidence, and build real-world skills in a low-pressure, inclusive environment. For many teens, pairing therapeutic support with a community-based program like Alive Center can be especially powerful, allowing skills learned in therapy to be practiced in real-life social settings.

If you’re wondering whether additional support could help your teen, whether through therapy, assessment, or community connection, we’re here to help guide you toward the right support.

On Saturday, January 10, 2026, the Alive Center in Naperville was filled with donors, alumni, board members, interns, volunteers, staff, and community partners for our Donor & Alumni Appreciation Event. This event was a chance to reconnect and reflect on the people and programs that continue to shape Alive’s impact.

At its core, Alive has always been about people, teens finding belonging, adults showing up with care, and a community willing to invest in growth and possibility. Simply said, this event was a reminder that none of that happens alone.

One of the most meaningful moments of the evening was honoring three award recipients whose work stood out over the past year.

Intern of the Year: Addison Chou
Addison was recognized for her thoughtful and lasting contributions to Alive’s growth behind the scenes. During her internship, she worked closely with the Come Alive Institute to support the rollout of Alive’s franchising model, helping lay the foundation for future expansion into new communities. She also created the framework for Alive’s vCRM donor engagement workflow, strengthening how Alive builds and sustains relationships with our supporters. Addison’s work reflected both strategic thinking and a deep understanding of Alive’s mission.

Volunteer of the Year: Harsha Nandhakumar
Harsha’s connection to Alive spans several years, and his presence has become a steady constant at the Naperville Center. From leading clubs and programs like Dungeons & Dragons, to guiding teens during Drop-In, to welcoming prospective donors in through center tours, Harsha’s commitment shows up in many forms. His consistency, patience, and genuine care are a powerful example of how long-term volunteer engagement can shape a community.

Teen Initiative Program of the Year: Senior Simulators
This year’s Teen Initiative Program of the Year was awarded to Senior Simulators, a teen-led program created by Sidharth Brahmandam, Debabandya Dash, and Lukas Keane. The program uses virtual reality technology to bring immersive experiences, such as travel, art, and cultural exploration, to seniors living in assisted living facilities. Developed through Alive’s Teen Advisory Board, Senior Simulators reflects Alive’s teen-led, teen-driven model and the meaningful ways teens can create connection and impact across generations. Senior Simulators In Action

Voices That Brought Alive’s Impact to Life

In addition to award recognition, this event included reflections from speakers who shared what Alive has meant to them at different points in their lives. Executive Director Amanda McMillen and Founder and CEO Kandice Henning spoke to Alive’s mission, growth, and the importance of community support in sustaining this work.

Guests also heard from former Alive alum Aliza Akhter, who reflected on the lasting influence Alive continues to have beyond her teen years. Naperville Teen Advisory Board Vice President Debabandya Dash shared his perspective as a current teen leader, and Abby May, founder of Kits4Kids and a Teen Service Launchpad partner, spoke to the power of youth-led service and partnership. Together, their reflections highlighted the many ways Alive creates space for teens to feel seen, supported, and empowered.

With Gratitude

This event was made even more welcoming thanks to the generosity of Belgio’s Catering and DeEtta’s Bakery, who provided food and desserts for our guests to enjoy as they connected and celebrated together.

Most of all, the Donor & Alumni Appreciation Event served as a reminder that Alive’s impact is built collectively, through the dedication of interns, the consistency of volunteers, the creativity of teen leaders, and the generosity of our donors and partners. Needless to say, we are so grateful to everyone who continues to be part of the Alive community and the work ahead.

As part of Teen Tech Tutors, Alive Naperville Teen Advisory Board members provide tutoring services to older adults in multiple senior living communities throughout our area

This unique program is supported by a grant through AT&T to fund the Teen Tech Tutors program, an intergenerational initiative where trained teen leaders provide one-on-one technology assistance to older adults throughout the community.

Powered by Alive’s signature Teen-Led, Teen-Driven™ model, Teen Tech Tutors does more than teach technology.
“Thanks to the generosity of AT&T, our teens will be able to reach even more seniors who are struggling to keep up in today’s digital world,” said Kandice Henning, Founder and CEO of the Alive Center. “This grant allows us to empower teens to take on meaningful leadership roles while providing a vital service that promotes connection, independence, and inclusion for older adults.”

About Teen Tech Tutors

Teen Tech Tutors empowers teens ages 15–18 to assist seniors with essential technology skills, including using smartphones and tablets, video calling, email, telehealth apps, and online safety best practices. Offered at no cost to participants, the program has already helped many older adults feel more confident, capable, and connected in an increasingly digital world.

With support from AT&T, the Alive Center will:

Expand programming across its Naperville, Aurora, and Hanover Park locations

Impact Beyond Technology

Teen Tech Tutors directly addresses social isolation, one of the greatest health risks facing older adults today while offering teens real-world leadership experience, professional skill-building, and a strong sense of purpose. In 2024, more than 78% of Alive teens reported increased confidence, and 71% reported improved leadership skills through programs like Teen Tech Tutors.

Through Teen Tech Tutors, Alive teens are not only closing the digital divide, they’re building relationships, strengthening communities, and proving that when teens are trusted to lead, everyone benefits.

During a recent Teen Tech Tutoring session to a local senior living center, teens spent the afternoon helping residents with everyday tech, showing them how to send text messages, navigate apps, and stay connected with family and friends.

What started as a simple tech lesson quickly became something much more meaningful. Through patience, kindness, and genuine connection, our teens are building bridges across generations and making a real difference in the lives of seniors in our community.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alive Center Launches Giving Tuesday Campaign to Raise $100,000, Because Every Teen Deserves Alive

Naperville, IL November 11, 2025 – The Alive Center for Teens is proud to kick off its Every Teen Deserves Alive annual appeal with a bold Giving Tuesday goal: raise $100,000 in one day to expand free, prevention-focused mental health and leadership programs for teens across Naperville, Aurora, and Hanover Park.

Giving Tuesday, Tuesday, December 2, 2025 comes at a pivotal moment as today’s youth continue to face unprecedented mental health challenges, pressure to perform, and increasing social isolation because of social media and overuse of electronics. Alive is meeting that need by providing teens with something every young person deserves: a safe place to belong, be heard, build confidence, and become who they are meant to be.

“Think back to your teenage years,” said Kandice Henning, Alive Founder & CEO. “Who helped you find your voice? Where did you go when you needed to feel safe, seen, and understood? Today’s teens deserve that same support, and Alive is here to provide it.”

Alive’s Teen-Led, Teen-Driven™ model empowers youth to lead programs, mentor peers, and develop emotional resilience, all at no cost to families. In 2024, Alive served more than 1,000 teens across its three centers, with measurable impact:

84% reported increased self-confidence.

71% improved their ability to cope with stress.

72% felt a greater sense of belonging.

73% experienced increased purpose, excitement, and personal growth

97% of Teen Advisory Board members gained leadership skills

“Every Teen Deserves Alive isn’t just a campaign, it’s our reality,” said Maggie Weiterman, Director of Development & Marketing. “We see teens come in unsure if they fit anywhere, and then watch friendships form, confidence bloom, and walls come down. We hear laughter where there used to be silence, and watch leaders emerge from those who once stood in the back of the room. That’s the power of belonging. Prevention matters. Connection saves lives, and every gift helps one more teen know they matter. Right now, all bequest gifts are being matched up to $100,000, doubling your impact for teens in our community.”

How Donations Help Teens Thrive

Giving Tuesday gifts directly support:

Free after-school Drop-In hours

Peer mentoring & leadership opportunities

Homework help & tutoring

STEM and creative arts programs

Mental wellness and life-skills workshops

Social work intern supervision and youth support volunteers

Alive’s commitment is simple: if a teen needs a safe place to go, they will have one, free of charge.

Ways to Support

Make a match donation that doubles Giving Tuesday donations

Last week, Alive Center founder Kandice Henning returned to her alma mater, Naperville North High School, to deliver the keynote address at the school’s National Honor Society induction ceremony. Speaking to hundreds of students, families, and educators, Kandice shared a heartfelt and powerful message about what it means to live, and lead, with character.

The National Honor Society is built on four pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Kandice focused her speech on the last, and perhaps most foundational of the four: character. “Character matters because it goes with you wherever you go,” she told the audience. “It shows up when you help others, when you take care of what’s been entrusted to you, and when you step up as a leader.”

With humor and humility, she admitted that even she turned to ChatGPT to ask, “What makes up good character?” The list she received, integrity, respect, courage, humility, and self-discipline, resonated deeply, especially when she added her personal favorite: authenticity.

Throughout her address, Kandice encouraged students to reflect on who they are and what they stand for, emphasizing that “character starts from the inside.” Drawing from her own experiences as a leader and founder, she spoke candidly about moments of personal growth, from learning to respond calmly in moments of anger to practicing accountability as both an individual and a leader.

At Alive, Kandice shared, accountability and integrity are more than values on paper, they are daily practices. “Our staff know I own my mistakes,” she said, “because it gives them permission to be human and to fail, too.”

Kandice also reminded students to balance ambition with intention. “Don’t try to do everything,” she advised. “Choose the things that truly matter to you, the things that make you come alive.”

Her closing words echoed a truth that resonates far beyond the high school auditorium:

“Your character is your superpower. Not your grades, not your résumé, not your follower count, your character. Be the one who shows up. Be the one whose actions match your words.”

For Kandice, character isn’t just a quality, it’s a lifelong compass that guides how we learn, lead, and live.

🎥 Watch Kandice’s full keynote speech below to be inspired by her wisdom and warmth.

Recently, Alive’s mission came full circle as members of our Alive Link Alumni Group (comprised of past teen leads) returned to inspire and guide the next generation of leaders during a powerful panel discussion titled “Ready, Set, College!”

Presented exclusively to our current Teen Advisory Boards (TAB), this event was created to ease anxieties, answer questions, and provide real, honest insights about the transition from high school to college.

What made this night so impactful was the authenticity and relatability of the speakers. These alumni were once in the exact same seats as our current TAB teen, navigating big decisions, uncertainty, and excitement about their futures. Now thriving in college, they were eager to share what they wish they knew and offer firsthand guidance.

Topics That Mattered Most to Teens

The conversation hit on key areas that are often the most overwhelming parts of the college journey:

College Application Process
Our alumni walked teens through everything from deadlines to essays, explaining how to make applications stand out and how to manage stress during the process.

Choosing the Right Schools
Panelists shared personal stories about how they narrowed down their college lists, not just based on prestige, but on financial fit, campus culture, academic support, and overall environment.

Deciding on a Major
One of the biggest worries teens voiced was, “What if I don’t know what I want to major in?” Alumni reassured them that it’s okay to not have everything figured out and that many students change majors during college. The emphasis was on exploration, passion, and growth rather than pressure.

Creating a Safe Space for Real Questions

What made the night truly special was the vulnerability shared. Teens were able to ask honest questions, about financial aid, homesickness, academic challenges, and even imposter syndrome. Our alumni responded with compassion, clarity, and encouragement.

One TAB member shared afterward,

“Hearing from people who were literally in my shoes just a few years ago made everything feel so much less scary. I actually feel excited now instead of stressed.”

Why This Matters

Alive is not just preparing teens for today, we are preparing them for life beyond our walls. The Ready Set College panel is just one example of how our Teen-Led, Teen-Driven™ model continues to grow through mentorship, leadership, and real-world readiness.

By connecting current teens with alumni who have walked the path before them, we are building a powerful cycle of empowerment, teens helping teens become the confident, resilient leaders of tomorrow.

What’s Next

This is just the beginning for Alive Link. Future panel topics will include:

Financial planning and scholarships

Navigating college social life and mental health

Career pathways and internships

Alive Alumni are not just staying connected, they’re leading the way.

Because when teens are supported, mentored, and believed in, they don’t just step into the future, they shape it.

Written by: Amanda McMillen, LCSW, with support by AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept—it’s here, shaping how our children learn, play, and interact with the digital world. AI is becoming an integral part of everyday life, from AI-powered homework help to creative tools that generate music and art. While these advancements offer exciting opportunities, they also present challenges that parents should be aware of.

This guide will help you understand what AI is, how your child may use it, and how to ensure they navigate AI safely and responsibly.

What is AI?

AI refers to technology that can perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognizing patterns, making decisions, and generating content. Your child is likely already interacting with AI daily—whether it’s through virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, recommendation algorithms on YouTube and Netflix, or even chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Grok.

One powerful type of AI is Large Language Models (LLMs), which can generate text, answer questions, and assist with tasks like writing, coding, and problem-solving. While these tools can be helpful, they also come with risks if used without proper guidance.

How Might Your Child Use AI?

AI is influencing many aspects of children’s lives, including:

Education

AI-powered tools are making learning more interactive and personalized:

Khanmigo (by Khan Academy) – An AI tutor that helps students with math, science, and writing, providing personalized feedback.

Socratic (by Google) – Allows students to take a photo of a homework problem and get step-by-step explanations.

Quizlet AI Tutor – Uses AI to help students study more efficiently with customized quizzes and explanations.

👉 How Kids Use It: A student struggling with algebra might ask Khanmigo for help solving an equation step by step, or they might take a picture of their history assignment in Socratic to get summaries of key concepts.

Creative Expression

AI is opening doors for young artists, writers, and musicians to explore their creativity:

DALL·E (by OpenAI) – Generates images from text descriptions, allowing kids to create digital artwork.

Soundraw – Helps kids compose music by selecting a mood and style, and the AI generates an original track.

Storybird AI – Assists young writers in creating illustrated stories based on their ideas.

👉 How Kids Use It: A child might type “a futuristic city with flying cars” into DALL·E to generate a unique image, or they might use Soundraw to create background music for a school project.

Chatbots & Interaction

Some kids use AI chatbots for research, brainstorming, or even entertainment:

ChatGPT (by OpenAI) – Can answer questions, help with writing, and generate creative ideas.

Replika – An AI chatbot designed for conversation and emotional support.

AI Dungeon – A text-based game where AI creates an interactive storytelling experience.

👉 How Kids Use It: A child writing a short story might ask ChatGPT for character name ideas, or they might play AI Dungeon to experience an AI-generated fantasy adventure.

What Should Parents Be Aware of & How Can They Help?

AI is a powerful tool, but it’s important to guide children in using it wisely. Here are key concerns to watch for and ways to support your child’s responsible AI use:

1. Overreliance on AI

The concern: AI can be an easy shortcut for schoolwork, leading to a lack of deep learning. Some kids may also form emotional attachments to AI chatbots, impacting real-life social skills.

Signs This May Be an Issue:

Your child consistently turns to AI for homework rather than trying to solve problems themselves.

They seem overly attached to an AI chatbot, preferring it over real-life interactions.

How to help: Encourage your child to use AI as a learning assistant rather than a replacement for thinking. Promote offline interactions and discussions about their AI use. For example, you could ask your child, “How do you decide when to use AI for homework help versus doing it on your own?” Or you could inquire, “If AI disappeared tomorrow, how would you handle your assignment differently?”

2. Misinformation & Bias

The concern: AI-generated responses aren’t always accurate and may provide outdated, biased, or even completely false responses. AI can “hallucinate”—meaning it makes up false information.

Signs This May Be an Issue:

Your child repeats incorrect facts from AI without questioning them.

They accept AI-generated information as truth without cross-checking sources.

How to help: Teach kids to fact-check AI-generated information using trusted sources such as educational websites, news outlets, official government or institutional sites, or peer-reviewed journals. Explain how biases in AI can affect what they see online. If AI claims something is true, check at least two or three reputable sources to confirm the information. If only unverified blogs or social media posts repeat the claim, be skeptical. If AI gives you an exact quote, book title, or study reference, search for it online. If you can’t find it, it may be fabricated.
👉 Tip: If an AI gives a statistic, exact quote, book title, study reference, or fact, do a quick search: “Is [fact] true?” and see what credible sources say.

3. Ethics & Academic Integrity

The concern: AI-generated content raises questions about plagiarism and originality. Kids might submit AI-written essays as their own work.

Signs This May Be an Issue:

Their writing suddenly changes in style, fluency, or complexity.

They complete assignments unusually fast, with little effort.

How to help: Have conversations about academic honesty and the importance of using AI ethically, such as citing AI assistance when appropriate. You can work together to set family guidelines on when and how AI can be used for school
For example:

✅ Allowed: Getting ideas, checking grammar, summarizing long articles.

❌ Not Allowed: Copying AI-generated essays, solving math problems without trying first.

4. Privacy & Security

The concern: AI tools collect user data, and some AI chatbots may encourage kids to overshare 1) personal details, 2) financial and account information, 3) private conversations and personal problems, 4) sensitive school information, 5) location and travel plans, 6) photos or biometric data, or 7) anything that could be used to impersonate them. AI chatbots don’t “forget” what you tell them, and some store or analyze conversations. Personal info could then be misused or exposed in data breaches.

Signs This May Be an Issue:

Your child shares personal details with AI chatbots or online platforms without hesitation.

They don’t understand the risks of online privacy or how data is collected.

How to help: Set privacy settings appropriately, educate your child about not sharing personal information with AI, and monitor which tools they use.

✅ Teach kids the “Would I tell a stranger?” rule—if they wouldn’t share it with a random person, they shouldn’t share it with AI.

✅ Encourage them to think before they type and use AI as a tool, not a diary.

✅ Remind them that AI can store conversations—even when it says it “forgets” or “doesn’t save data.”

5. Deepfakes & Online Scams

The concern: AI-generated scams, fake videos, and deepfake content are becoming more convincing. Deepfake technology works by analyzing large amounts of real video or audio of a person and generating fake but realistic content that mimics them in new ways.

Signs This May Be an Issue:

Your child shares or believes in fake AI-generated videos, images, or messages of a celebrity, family member, or friend.

They struggle to identify credible sources online.

How to help: Teach kids to recognize suspicious content, question sources, and verify online information before believing or sharing it.

👀 Unnatural blinking or facial movements – The person may blink less often or their expressions may seem stiff.

🎙 Lip-sync issues – The words don’t perfectly match the lip movements.

✨ Weird lighting or shadows – The face may look too smooth, or shadows might not align naturally.

🔄 Glitchy details – Earrings, glasses, or background details may flicker or disappear.

🔊 Odd voice distortions – AI-generated voices may sound slightly robotic or off in tone.

👉 Tip: Always double-check viral videos before believing or sharing them. Fact-check with trusted news sources!

Social media is deeply embedded in the lives of today’s teens, influencing their social interactions, self-image, and even mental health. It serves as a space for self-expression, entertainment, and connection, allowing young people to interact with peers, discover new interests, and engage with global conversations. For many teens, social media is not just a pastime—it is a central part of their identity formation and social development. However, the fast-paced and highly curated nature of these platforms can also contribute to issues like cyberbullying, anxiety, and unrealistic comparisons.

As digital landscapes continue to evolve, it is essential for parents and educators to stay informed about the platforms teens frequent, the appeal of these spaces, and the potential risks they pose. While social media offers opportunities for creativity, learning, and advocacy, it also requires careful navigation to avoid exposure to harmful content, privacy concerns, and addictive behaviors.

This guide provides a comprehensive look at the most popular social media platforms among teens, explaining how they work, their benefits and drawbacks, and key safety measures that can help young users build a positive and secure online experience. By fostering awareness and open conversations, adults can help teens engage with social media in a way that enhances their well-being rather than detracts from it.

1. YouTube: The Digital Learning and Entertainment Hub

Description:
YouTube is the world’s largest video-sharing platform, offering content ranging from educational tutorials and DIY projects to entertainment, music, gaming, and social commentary. Users can watch videos, create content, and interact through comments and live chats. Many teens turn to YouTube for learning new skills, entertainment, and staying informed on current trends.

Teen Usage: 95% of teens ages 13–17 use YouTube, and 77% visit it daily (Pew Research, 2022).

Pros:
✅ Access to educational and skill-building content (e.g., science experiments, history lessons, coding tutorials).
✅ Encourages creativity and self-expression through content creation.
✅ Can provide a sense of community through shared interests.

Cons:
⚠️ Exposure to inappropriate content, even with restricted settings.
⚠️ Unregulated comments sections can expose teens to cyberbullying.

Cons:
⚠️ False sense of privacy—screenshots and third-party apps can still save messages.
⚠️ Exposure to sexting, cyberbullying, and inappropriate content.
⚠️ Snap Map can reveal real-time locations, leading to potential privacy risks.

Safety Tips for Parents & Educators:
🔹 Enable Ghost Mode to prevent location sharing on Snap Map.

Pinterest: Visual Inspiration and Idea-Sharing

🔹 Great for DIY projects, fashion, lifestyle, and educational content.
🔹 Encourage a critical approach to content and healthy self-image discussions.

How Parents and Educators Can Help

Guiding teens through the world of social media requires a balance of supervision, open communication, and education. Rather than simply restricting access, parents and educators can empower young users to make responsible choices by teaching digital literacy, promoting healthy boundaries, and fostering critical thinking about online interactions. By staying informed and engaged, adults can help teens navigate social media in a way that supports their mental health and overall well-being.

✅ Stay Informed – Familiarize yourself with the platforms your teen uses.
✅ Set Boundaries – Establish healthy screen time habits and digital wellness routines.
✅ Foster Open Conversations – Encourage teens to talk about their online experiences.
✅ Teach Digital Literacy – Help teens analyze online content and interactions critically.

By understanding the platforms shaping teen social experiences, parents and educators can guide them in making safer, healthier digital choices.

January 21, 2025

Amanda McMillen, LCSW, Executive Director, Alive Center

Social media has become integral to teens’ lives, offering platforms for connection, creativity, and learning. Yet, while it meets some of their needs, it often leaves significant gaps that require attention. Understanding why teens are drawn to social media and addressing what’s missing can help parents, educators, and communities better support their well-being. Welcome to the first blog in our series Scroll Smart: Navigating Teens, Social Media, and Mental Health.

To go deeper and gather real-life information on social media interest and utilization, the Alive Center conducted interviews in 2024 with a select number of youth ages 11 to 18 years. Additionally, the Alive Center Mental Health Board Committee searched the topic, and below is a summary of what we found.

The Pull of Social Media

Connection and Relationships: Social media provides teens with a way to stay in touch with friends and make new connections, especially in situations where face-to-face interactions are limited. A recent survey revealed that 58% of teens feel more accepted on social media, and 67% see it as a valuable support system during tough times.

Creativity and Self-Expression: For many teens, social media is a canvas for creativity. From sharing photography to experimenting with video content, it offers a platform to showcase talents and explore identities. Over 70% of teens report that social media helps them express their creativity.

Entertainment and Fun: Social media offers endless entertainment, from viral trends to humorous content. Teens curate their feeds to focus on uplifting and engaging material, providing a much-needed escape and enjoyment.

Learning and Discovery: Platforms like YouTube and TikTok are not just for fun—they’re also tools for learning. Nearly half of teens use social media to explore new hobbies, gain skills, and access educational content beyond the classroom.

What’s Missing

Despite these benefits, social media often falls short of fostering deeper, more meaningful aspects of development:

Face-to-Face Interaction: Heavy reliance on digital communication can hinder teens’ ability to develop crucial social skills like interpreting non-verbal cues and empathetic listening. These skills are essential for building authentic, lasting relationships.

Security and Privacy: Teens frequently face risks like cyberbullying, online harassment, and exposure to harmful content. Many platforms prioritize engagement over safety, leaving young users vulnerable.

Happiness and Emotional Well-Being: While social media can be a source of support, excessive use often correlates with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and feelings of inadequacy. The pressure to maintain a curated online presence can negatively impact self-esteem.

Balanced Life and Time Management: The addictive design of social media platforms often disrupts teens’ ability to balance academics, sleep, physical activity, and personal hobbies. This imbalance can ripple into other areas of life, affecting health and performance.

Bridging the Gaps

To ensure that teens thrive both online and offline, it’s vital to address these shortcomings:

Encourage face-to-face interactions through extracurricular activities and community programs.

Educate teens about online safety and advocate for stronger platform regulations.

Promote mindfulness and balance by helping teens set healthy boundaries with their screen time.

Provide spaces, like the Alive Center, where teens can experience meaningful connections, explore their interests, and build critical life skills.

By understanding both the allure and the limitations of social media, we can better support teens in navigating its complexities. Together, we can empower them to harness its benefits while safeguarding their emotional and mental well-being.

Stay tuned for our blog topic, Decoding the Digital World: Platforms, Users, and Purpose, as a part of Scroll Smart: Navigating Teens, Social Media, and Mental Health.

The Alive Center has been open 5 ½ years now and we hear all kinds of wonderful things from the parents and guardians of the teens we support. From the teens that come to drop-in day in and day out, we hear one consistent theme. They all say that the Alive Center staff are “sooooo nice”. It got me thinking, why are we so nice? Why do all of the kids say this and what does it say about the world outside of the Alive Center? Maybe it is not always such a nice place.

One of our pillars at Alive is “Belonging”. We are a place for ALL teens to belong and they feel this. They are welcomed and treated the same regardless of gender, race, sexual preference, religion, abilities, etc. The teens feel this. They know that we talk the talk and mean it and thus they gravitate back to us. I was a big fan of the TV show cheers. Norm would walk into the bar and the entire bar would look at him and loudly greet him with a big “Norm”. Many teens often feel invisible in the world. They live in these state of none of them feeling like they truly belong. They struggle to find a place to fit in- where they truly feel as if they belong. The Alive Center makes sure that they are seen and we aim to be forever inclusive in all that we do.

Another of our pillars is “Discovery”. The name Alive comes from my favorite quote by Howard Thurman. “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive then go and do it. Because what the world needs is people that have come alive.” At Alive teens can try their hand at art, cooking, music, writing, robotics, computer science, poetry and so much more. There are no grades and no fear of failure as we make trying new things fun, just as it should be. We laugh at failure and try it again! We want our teens to find what makes them come alive. They find this environment not only fun but supportive. What a great way to learn!

“Leadership” is our third pillar. At Alive we are Teen-Led and Teen-Driven. We literally let our teens create and lead programs all by themselves. They know that we are there if they need help which boosts their confidence. We do not treat them like kids but instead like people. They love this and comment on it all of the time. We are being nice but letting them take the lead. We provide guidance and support, but let them take the lead.

And last but not least, our fourth pillar is “Resiliency”. In a generation of helicopter parenting, teens need more independence and they need to understand and respond to what is expected of them. At Alive they clean up after themselves, they lead, and they are held accountable. We also teach them important life skills such as cooking, mindfulness, time management and more. Empowering teens to be more resilient is being nice to them and deep down they know it.

So why do our teens say that “the Alive Center staff is soooo nice”? I say that it is because we accept them JUST AS THEY ARE with no expectations of who we think they should be. We meet them where they are at. We create a nonjudgmental space for them to explore who they are. We are open. We are kind. We have meaningful conversations, we hold them accountable and we laugh and play… keeping life light. They are still children after all.

And this is why we plan to build more Alive Centers, to give such a place to more teens!
