Excellent article, with good suggestions on what not to do to find what you enjoy, as well as the more usual ideas on what to do! I especially like the examples given on trying new things and exploring them, as well as the wise words on doing these things with other people for mutual support and to increase the fun.

Positive attitude is one of the keys to having positive experiences in life. If more people understood and embraced this truth, the world would be a better place and we'd have many more happy people. Happy people just naturally spread joy, curiosity, and kindness as they go about their work and their play. They have fun! Human beings love playing and having fun. Each might define it differently, but they would agree on the idea. Much of success in life flows from having a positive attitude. Your emphasis on this shows impressive maturity.

Most importantly, this article encourages people to take responsibility for driving and steering their own personal search for career ideas, compelling personal interests, and paths to try out. You are so right that most of us don't know what we want to do when we're 17! We all feel the pressures from people who think we should have narrowed it down already. I'm here to tell you that I chose something, reluctantly changed my major in the second semester of my Junior year in college, and then had no idea what I was going to do with that BA in English. I took my time. I worked for a year in places like a bank, a department store, and a fulfillment center. (The latter was a personal disaster, but I learned important things about myself!) Bottom line is that I followed my interests, my loves, my passion. I continued to keep my mind and eyes open as you suggest, even after working my chosen profession for many years. My choices weren't always successful, but following my fun, my passion led me to jobs and projects and places and fun I never imagined at 17. I have a good feeling that you, and the people who take your words to heart, will find success and discover the joy of working.
